Announcing Oquirrh Park, 2020 US Playground of the Year

Updated: Mar 17, 2021

Test your agility and strength, play a game of tag, be a ninja warrior, or just explore a new movement - it’s all right here!

The timing of the building of Oquirrh Park in Kearns, UT could not have been better. When the world around us is shifting and changing, getting outside and having safe places to move and be a kid has never been more important.

Built in collaboration with Salt Lake County Parks, Environmental Planning Group (EPG), and Berliner Seilfabrik, Rhetta McIff, the Creative Play Designer from LuckyDog Recreation, spent more than two years assisting with every element and piece of play equipment, shade structures, movement of pathways, elevations, and designs of angles and colors.

The end result is aesthetically spectacular. White steel posts anchor the play structures and echo the architecture of the Olympic Oval in the background of this classic play space. To pick up the subtle hue of the Wasatch mountain range in the background, purple rope-covered cables connect and invite children and grown-ups alike to join the fun. Blue hues in the poured-in-place surfacing are a brilliant match to the bright open skies, and the yellows and oranges give a nod to the 2002 Winter Olympics. This fresh design is a salute to the history of the community.

Oquirrh Park is made up of 5 impressive Berliner brand structures (Neptune, DNA tower, Chessboard, Trii, Speedway) all linked by bridges, ladders, and slides to create the ultimate challenge course. An enclosed bridge over 20’ in the air links the two huge net structures each with their own massive tube slide.

The speedway (think zipline on steroids) is the ultimate finale to the course with a ride more adventurous than most! Count them, 14 additional freestanding pieces are strategically placed throughout the site giving a motion and activity for everyone, from the most adventurous explorer to the timid quiet play types. The ability to test your agility and strength, play a game of tag, be a ninja warrior, or just explore a new movement - it’s all right here.

Out of all the Berliner brand projects from across the US in 2020, Oquirrh Park won “2020 Playground of the Year” hands-down competing for the coveted award with other amazing playground projects across the US. LuckyDog Recreation is thrilled to have received this acknowledgement!

Just put Oquirrh Park in your map app and you’ll be there in minutes from anywhere along the Wasatch Front. We’d love to see your pictures and receive your feedback. You can find LuckyDog Recreation on Facebook and Instagram.
